Introduction

Creating spaces for students to study doesn’t have to be repetitive or boring in terms of design and functionality; designs need to accommodate student-centric spaces that are engaging and inviting enough for them to use. Let’s see how we at SM Studio designed a hostel that is student-centric and functionally sufficient for easy usage.

What makes this hostel different?

1.   Huge cafeteria

As college students tend to be the least regular with their meals, adding a big cafeteria helps the students never have issues with accessing the canteen whenever they feel the need to eat. Also, adding seating for up to 400 people also helps regulate the crowd more conveniently.

2.   Adding a veranda

Having a veranda on the first floor above the canteen helps students be exposed to fresh ventilation, improving their health and providing them with better spaces to spend their free time in. It also provides an indoor-outdoor connection, improving the space for students and not constricting them to their rooms.

3.   Bridge connecting corridors

Having bridges that connect corridors in the middle of the veranda on a higher floor helps students interact with each other and spend more time together through all the spaces provided to them while building memories together.

4.   Balconies for each room

With the lack of balconies these days, providing students with a common balcony helps them gain access to natural light, ventilation, and space for outdoor and indoor activities for them to calm themselves from study stress while also increasing space for student gatherings in an informal setting.

5.   3 different staircases for accessibility

The more staircases there are the better it is for the accessibility of students around their hostel. Adding more staircases improves fire safety of the structure by providing alternative escape routes, enhances accessibility by reducing congestion and facilitating movement for people and equipment, and can contribute to the architectural design as a feature or space-creating element

6.   More lifts for veranda space

Adding extra accessibility to veranda spaces helps your students feel more grounded in the environment around them and find more interactive spaces while being in a well-ventilated area. Making spaces with greenery accessible to students is very important in order to facilitate networking.

Conclusion

Having hostels for your students doesn’t mean it needs to be the same boring space that doesn’t have much space for students to interact, except for the canteen or classes. Design your hostels with a purpose making it more functional for students going through a very important academic phase in their life.
